We will then make recommendations, offer advice, give strategies, and provide resources that will support the individual needs of your child and family. How long will my child need speech & language Therapy?
Depending on the child, speech and language therapy may last for a few months to a few years. The length of time needed in therapy depends on a child’s unique needs and challenges. After an initial evaluation or consultation, a speech language pathologist determines areas of need and establishes goals and objectives to help your child meet those goals. Your speech and language pathologist provides regular progress reports as well as information and resources so you can collaborate with your child and the therapist to help meet their goals in the therapy setting at home, at school, and in the community.
What should I tell my child about speech therapy?
It is okay to talk to your child about speech therapy. You can remind your child that we all have difference challenges and need help learning different things. Remind your child of the help they get at school to learn different academic skills, help from a coach to learn about a sport, or help from a music teacher to learn how to play an instrument. Speech therapy is another area they can get some help.
Being aware of their goals and why they are attending speech therapy will allow your child the opportunity to be an active participant in therapy and increase their awareness of the goals they are working toward.
